Zanzibar: Conservation and Design Guidelines

A comprehensive brochure designed for the local community, combining guidelines and illustrations for the restoration and conservation of historic buildings in the Old Stone Town of Zanzibar. PDF files and chapter sections we made available to the public through the conservation center, an intiative of the Historic Cities Program of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

Conservation Guidelines for Zanzibar Stone Town - A comprehensive book and online resource designed to engage the community as a whole in conservation. The project was sponsored by The Swedish International Development and Co-operation Agency (SIDA), the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) in Geneva, Switzerland and UNESCO. Design and Art Direction by Robin Lee Reed, written and illustrated by Stephen Battle and Tony Steel. This 200-page document has been translated into Swahili and the design and production was managed with local resources in Zanzibar. This project was all part of a larger strategy for capacity building and sustainable community development.
